Before embarking on a tour of Germany, Ulrich graced a full crowd with his presence at The Roost. If you haven’t been to The Roost I think you should check it out. It’s a nice medium sized venue with quality sound and lighting. It is also one of the few great venues outside of downtown Austin in my opinion.
Ulrich’s sound is known as “Viking Blues”. To me, it’s a sounds somewhere between Stevie Ray Vaughn and Steve Vai. The Texas blues influence is undoubtable. He does have a few tricks up his sleeve…
He opened up by soloing using a bowed on a beautifully hand carved electric guitar.
It definitely set a good tone for theatrics. Ulrich has a warm smile and aura about him that his audience gravitates towards. I can tell you that he seems like the genuine article when you talk with him.
Soon after the band joined him up on the stage and the full ensemble began to play.
Ulrich has multiple guitars on stage including the one that looks very custom carved. His main axe was the Fender Stratocaster, clearly helping him achieve that classic Texas blues tone.
Ulrich’s Tribe is a tight rhythm section of keys, bass, and drums. They are a very solid sounding quartet. The keyboard player had the nice Nord Stage organ and keys pumping through the speakers. I found the best vibe between the bass player and Ulrich. They seemed to have some chemistry and often moved in sync while grooving together!
He even played an acoustic guitar for a nice change of pace towards the end of the show. It is obvious why he has such devoted fans. He’s a solid performer, showman, and connects with his audience in a deep way! Ulrich has a variety of styles including bluesy songs and post rock tunes. Some are very soft and harmonious, others are more driven blues tunes and others still are of a tribal rock variety.
See. Look at that warm, genuine smile 🙂
I had a great time at the show experiencing both Ulrich, his Tribe, and The Roost for the first time. If you want a slight twist on the Texas blues sound with more than just typical blues progressions then you should give Ulrich a listen and attend one of his shows 🙂
Ulrich is currently promoting his tour of Europe, but he will be back in May. I wish the best for him on his journeys and spreading his “Viking Blues” far and wide.
